This is how the COVID-19 pandemic started

The pandemic that has led the world to close borders, isolate the population and to extreme prevention measures during 2020, still has nations on alert.

In this chronology, you will find the main dates that marked the beginning of this pandemic until its arrival in Peru.

  • On December 31, 2019, multiple cases of atypical pneumonia were reported in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. The cause is still unknown during this period; by January 1, 2020, Chinese health authorities closed the wholesale fish and seafood market in Huanan, after it is presumed the source may have come from wild animals sold in this place, a hypothesis that has not yet been confirmed.
  • On January 7, 2020, the Chinese authorities analyze that it could be a new coronavirus, since previous analyses show that the cases do not correspond to SARS or MERS viruses.
  • On January 24, 2020, the first cases of the new coronavirus in Europe, which were detected in France, were reported.         
  • On February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization – WHO, names the new coronavirus COVID-19.
  • On February 18, 2020, the number of people who have died from COVID-19 exceeds 2,000 cases.
  • On February 25, 2020, the region of Lombardy in Italy delivers a list of cities and towns that are in complete lockdown. Approximately 100,000 people are affected by the travel restrictions as a result of these measures.
  • On March 6, 2020, Peru confirms the first case of coronavirus.
  • On March 9, 2020, the president of Italy announces to the world the closure of borders.
  • On March 11, WHO declares the new coronavirus, COVID-19, a pandemic.
  • On March 13, 2020, the arrival of flights from Europe and Asia is suspended in Peru.
  • On March 15, 2020, the President of Peru declares a State of National Emergency due to COVID-19, for an initial period of 15 calendar days.
  • On April 23, 2020, 20 914 cases of people infected with COVID-19 are reported in Peru.
  • On May 2, 2020, the resumption of economic activities in Peru is approved in four (4) phases that are outlined for the months of May, June, July and August.
